Quiet Curiosity – Original Smoke Art on Paper

SKU: BIBI-OSA-027-QUIET-CURIOSITY Category: Tags: , , ,

Tucked into the leaves of a marula tree, the young leopard pauses. It isn’t hiding, and it isn’t on alert. Instead, it glances back with a calm, inquisitive gaze, as though briefly acknowledging the presence beyond the lens.

The deep, smokey darkness surrounding the cub reflects the nighttime hours when these animals move freely and unseen. In this brief encounter, captured by a night camera, there is no tension… only awareness. A quiet moment where curiosity replaces caution.

This commissioned artwork was created in response to that fleeting encounter. What lasted only seconds in the wild has been translated into smoke, layer by layer, preserving not only the form of the cub but the atmosphere of the moment itself.

The piece presented a unique technical challenge. The dense constellation of the young leopard’s spots required careful precision, while the rugged, flaking bark of the marula tree demanded a different approach entirely.

Throughout the process, strong contrasts were balanced: the softness of fur against the harsh texture of bark, and the subtle glow of leaves emerging from the surrounding darkness.

Built through many layers, the final piece carries a quiet sense of choice, as though the leopard might step forward out of the frame… or just as easily retreat into the night from which it emerged.
