Painted in Smoke 2

African Wild Dogs, also known as Painted Wolves, are among the most social and cooperative animals in the wild. Living and hunting in tightly knit packs, they rely on unspoken trust and deep emotional bonds, making them one of nature’s most unified teams.

Their patchy, painted coats are as unique as fingerprints, with no two dogs bearing the same pattern. The white-tipped tail may serve as a visual signal in tall grass, keeping the pack connected during hunts or helping pups follow a parent.

But this remarkable species is on the edge. With fewer than 6,600 left in the wild, African Wild Dogs face extinction due to habitat loss, human conflict, disease, and competition with larger predators. Snares set by poachers, vehicles on busy roads, and encroaching farmland have added to the challenges, making each remaining pack a precious rarity.

This piece is a tribute to their unbreakable spirit -and a call to protect it.
