Impalas are among the most commonly seen antelope in the Kruger National Park and are often considered the cornerstone of the African predator diet. In fact, many South Africans affectionately refer to them as the “McDonald’s of the bushveld,” thanks to the distinct “M” marking on their rumps—and their popularity in making biltong, a much-loved local delicacy.
But behind the jokes lies an animal of remarkable awareness and agility. Impalas are incredibly alert, with flexible necks that allow them to scan their surroundings constantly—an essential trait for an animal that’s always being watched, always being hunted.
I titled this piece Reflect, inspired by the quiet, thoughtful tension in their daily life. Every step an impala takes could mean the difference between life and death. That weight of decision-making… it mirrors our own human experience. We too are faced with moments that require sharp thought, forward planning, and difficult reflection. We’re all just trying to keep going, trying to make choices that ensure we see another day.
Sometimes, the quietest moments—when you pause to reflect—can hold the most strength.
